Today on Pioneer Day, I’m reflecting on the strength, faith, and determination of those who came before me. Utah was built by people who didn’t give up when things got hard—people who believed in something bigger than themselves.
That same pioneering spirit lives on through my family. The lessons they passed down shape the way I live, serve, and lead. Here are just a few of the people whose influence continues to guide me:
Shirley Anne Larson Hedburg Hanson – My grandmother, who taught me to love learning, serve with heart, and keep going through life’s hardest moments.
Mary JoAnn Krueger Hedburg – My mother, who lived a life of service. Her faith and work ethic pushes me to this day.
Robert Cottrell Hedburg – My grandfather, whose example of entrepreneurship and responsibility taught me how to lead with vision and follow through with action.
Henry “Hank” Krueger Jr. – My maternal grandfather. A Korean War veteran who could fix anything, he was hilarious, lighthearted, and always ready with a good tease. He taught me the value of hard work, resourcefulness, and how to bring joy into every room.
Benice Wollak Krueger – My grandmother, who showed me that small acts of care and frugality are just as powerful as big ones. She led by doing.
Mary Casey Headley – My step-grandmother, who modeled warmth, love, and the importance of making people feel at home.
Etling “Bud” Headley – My step-grandfather, who showed me that when something’s broken—whether in a home or in a community—you roll up your sleeves and fix it.
David & Deborah Hedburg – My father and stepmother, still living examples of heart, family, and steady, quiet stewardship.
I also honor the great-grandparents and generations before them—farmers, business owners, caregivers, and builders—who persevered so future generations could thrive.
These people didn’t seek titles or attention. They served, sacrificed, and stood strong for their families and communities.
Happy Pioneer Day, Eagle Mountain.
